Forro in the Dark @ City Winery Hudson Square / Tuesday, July 26 / Doors 5pm / FREE

For those who don’t already know, forró is the hip-swiveling, dancefloor-filling, rural party music of Brazil’s northeastern states. And Forró in the Dark is the collective of four New York-based Brazilian ex-pats –Mauro Refosco (zabumba drum and vocals) Davi Vieira (percussion and vocals) Guilherme Monteiro (guitar and vocals) and Jorge Continentino (pifano flute, sax and vocals) - who are updating this traditional sound for the 21st century. “In Brazil, forró literally means party,” says Mauro. “It’s a gathering, a good time. The objective is to make people dance.” Which is exactly what Forro In The Dark have been doing since 2003 at their weekly residence at East Village nightspot Nublu, where their signature blend of down home forró and urban cool have made them one of the city’s must-see buzz bands.

Brothers of Brazil @ Bowery Electric / Wednesday, July 27 at 9pm

It's probably safe to say that you haven't heard something like Brothers of Brazil before. For the past three years, the duo brothers Supla and Joäo have been creating a unique blend of traditional Brazilian bossa nova and samba with punk-rock and funk. Whether it's Supla's medieval twist on street punk or Joao's smooth demeanor with a feel of early Sinatra, their live show is like a fun roller coaster ride playing everything from soft ballads to grooving bossa rock rhythms. Check out the Samba Around the Clock video here.

Jorge Continentino's Pifanology w/ Loop B @ Nublu / Wednesday, July 27 at 10pm / Tickets $10

It started with a trip to the Northeast of Brazil in 1999 when Jorge Continentino was turned on to the pifano (a flute made of bamboo) by his friend Ramiro Musotto, noted Brazilian percussionist and producer. While they were playing and touring together with the popular pop-rock ska band Skank, they started a project together called "Caatinga Urbana" with songs written and recorded by Musotto and Continentino. Musotto has unfortunately passed in 2009 and the music theyrecorded together was never released. Jorge Continentino, who has recorded and performed with respected musicians like Milton Nascimento, Bebel Gilberto to name a few, will debut the music together with the cast of Forro in the Dark.

The opening set is by Loop B, a native of Sao Paulo whose solo performance combines electronic beats with junk percussion, anything from car dashboards to washing machines. Loop B has released seven albums and has worked closely with major Brazilian institutions to present his work. This is a unique performance where computer music meets Brazilian swing. Don't miss it!
